Volunteer Spotlight: Friends of Copperfield Nature Trails

Friends of Copperfield Nature Trails helps restore and maintain a part of the Walnut Creek Watershed that is a mix of riparian, Blackland Prairie and Edwards Plateau habitat. The area includes a small park, a series of ponds, tributaries leading to Walnut Creek and a section of Walnut Creek.

Large volunteer events happen at least four times per year that are a mix of picking up trash, invasive plant management, adding native seeds and plants, mulching, public outreach and documenting biodiversity.  More frequent small group events to work on invasive plant management are on-going throughout the year.

A regular group of volunteers meets for 1 hour almost every Friday morning from 9 to 10 AM throughout the year to do invasive plant management. Most volunteer events, including It’s My Park Day with Austin Parks Foundation and Keep Austin Beautiful Day, are listed on the GivePulse online volunteer platform and can be found by using the search fields with “Austin, Texas” and “Copperfield.”

After a successful first-time Roots & Wings Festival event in Fall 2025, more Roots & Wings Festival participation is in Friends of Copperfield Nature Trails future, and we will need volunteers to help out with information tables for adults and youth to spread the word about trees, native plants, and all the critters that benefit from them.

Copperfield Park is located in Northeast Austin at 1425 East Yager Lane. A map of the trail can be accessed at Trail Map – Friends of Copperfield Nature Trails. Balcones Canyonlands Chapter members Deana Dossey, Ian Durben, and Lucia Lian are regular volunteers that can be contacted to get more information about Copperfield Trail volunteering.
