Invasive Plant Removal Project at the Stenis Tract: Status & Upcoming Swarm!

As of our July 10th report date, our chapter members have girdled 217 Ligustrum lucidum (glossy privet) trees and removed 1,394 others. The final report date for the project will be on September 15th.
The Capital Area Master Naturalist chapter has finished work on the three sectors that were their responsibility in this joint project, and we’d love to be able to report 100% completion on our assigned sectors as well, but we’re going to need some help! Please consider joining us for one of our upcoming workdays. Just two hours of your time could mean two or more Ligustrum girdled.
The workdays are on the chapter calendar — most Mondays and Thursdays between now and mid-September. In addition to girdling, you’ll also have an opportunity to experience the joy of removing trees with a weed wrench.
Plan to celebrate completion of the project with us on Saturday, September 13th, at Invasive Swarm II: The Re-visit! where we’ll be inspecting our work, removing any new growth below the girdling points, and “harvesting” berries from another invasive plant, Nandina domestica. Registration details for the Swarm will be posted on Slack and emailed to members in mid-August.
