Pollinator Garden Committee is Getting Ready for Spring

Although most native plants might look asleep, there’s lots of activity in the BCTXMN Pollinator Garden Committee as we are getting our sites ready for when our plants and pollinators do wake up. This year is particularly exciting for the pollinator garden committee. Two sites are in their second year, and most plants survived the unusually hot and dry summer and the blasting hard freeze to finish out 2022. Now these plants are established, we are ready to take these gardens to the next level. In addition, two other gardens are ready to get a fresh start and Hamilton Pool Preserve looks poised for expansion.

We have increased our garden workdays to twice a month to be able to reach all of our pollinator garden sites with weeding, planting of early bloomers/evergreens and doing garden assessments for the upcoming year. If anyone prefers to work at a particular site during the week, contact Shayla Fleshman on slack or email (shayla.fleshman@gmail.com) and she will meet you there.

Finally, we have some activities coming up with the students at Menchaca Elementary School. If anyone is interested in making bug hotels or help with plant identification, reach out to Shayla. It’s very rewarding work.

Upcoming Saturday workdays from 9-noon for the Pollinator Garden Committee.

  • Feb 11: Concordia University
  • Feb. 25: Menchaca Elementary School
  • March 11: Hamilton Pool Preserve.
  • March 25: Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge

Watch the pollinator garden slack channel for details and reminders that will be posted.
